Digital safe or Strongroom ?

Yesterday I got the question: “What’s the difference between YobiDrive’s strongroom concept and “safe” or “vault” branded applications? Answer lies in what you can do with it. YobiDrive is much much more than a safe: it’s a safe enabler for cloud apps.

But let’s first come back to real life. What is your bank safe for ? It is for storing individual information, and usually not tons of information: a bank safe is quite small by nature. And that’s funny to see how this also turns to be true in the electronic world.
Electronic safes, numeric safe, vaults, however you call them, are ( or should, because some only have the name ) “transparent” storage places where only the owner has access to the content, just like a bank safe. The bank clerk ( the system administrator in the electronic world ) shouldn’t have access to data. There are initialitives of that kind in many countries, with various flavors and no ubiquitous market leader. When you remove the transparency feature, those are very basic applications with no other specific value added. Just like your bank safe, which is just a box without its secured door.

Now move one step backwards and look at the strongroom containing the individual safes: there is much more potential in there. First, you could imagine people meeting there and exchanging confidential information. Then, if the strongroom is big enough, you could have a full business process inside, bringing its own value added, plus total confidentiality.

Cloud computing has created many opportunities for cost reduction, but also many difficulties in maintaing confidentiality: that’s where a virtual strongroom makes things possible, without putting everything in the hands of a centralized system administrator.

That is what YobiDrive Keys has been designed for: managing the strongroom. It can be complemented by YobiDrive ObjectCloud, which directly embeds S3 compatible calls, collaborative filesystem management, and APIs for the internet of things.
So, basically, the cloud service publisher only has to focus on the business and collaborative features of the app, the strongroom management is almost transparent to him, technically and financially. Many applications can benefit from enhanced cloud condidentiality, in the area of finance, personal data, business exchanges, health-care… and of course file storage and sharing, bringing not only confidentiality, but also the value added from the app itself, and the benefits of cloud, such as prices, resilience, availability or scalability.

YobiDrive strongroom protected file sharing is just the visible part of the iceberg. It had to be there, for the iceberg to be visible. But there is much more you can do.
